My First Day after Marriage.# first day at Sasural.

Getting up in the unknown unfamiliar household, which has hysterically become my home overnight.
I belong to a nuclear Marathi family, I mostly stayed away from home. Also little introvert. Got married in a nice well to do big Marathi family with farmer background, leaving in village.
Now as you read “farmer” and “village” do not judge them as shown in the documentary films. They are very modernistic but strictly following their beliefs and cultures. So my first day in this family was quite an adventure for me.
1. Getting up in parallel dimension.
Believe me, first few seconds after I opened my eyes, I was clueless, where am I? ohh I got married yesterday, this is my Sasural. Yesterday, It was a dead sleep, because of all the hectic schedule. (No, Marathi family doesn’t have any suhagrat kind of thing).

2. Getting Ready, IN SAREE.
It’s a real challenge to get ready in saree, especially if you don’t know how to drape one. I knew, but apparently, I was too slow. So I got up at 6:30 and it took around an hour to get ready. Crosschecked, my mangalsutra, bindi, payal, everything that is important now onwards.

3. It was my home, my family, but I didn’t feel at home at all.
Group of strangers staring at me, the house full of guests, my every move was being analyzed and judged, I was so self-conscious. As soon as I came out of my room, one of relative handed me a big tray of teacups and asked me to serve everyone. Handling saree and that tray at a time. (god!!! I can do anything now) Although everyone was nice and trying to comfort me. my formal introduction to all the family members happened that day. It was really confusing, who is who’s what??!!!!!

4. There he is!!!
That day there was only one familiar face I was seeing, HIM. He was the bridge between me and his family. As this was arranged marriage, and we both are little shy, and family is a little conservative, it was awkward to talk to him openly in front of family members. So our talks were over chat. He did help me out with my serving morning tea program.
5. Am I supposed to laugh.. #Inside jokes!!!
All the family members were nicely behaving to me, comforting me, talking and chit-chatting to me. They told me all about my husband, his likes, dislikes, his habits, his mischiefs, plus some inside jokes.

6. Follow up Rituals.. Nope, not over yet.
After the wedding day, it took us almost a week to complete all the rituals. So it was a ‘satyanarayan pooja’ day. I was asked to get ready for it, not mentally, physically, that means wearing another saree, heavier one and wearing all your stuff because all the relatives who attended-missed are going to come. And I will be on focus. That saree weighed almost half of my weight. It took me two hours to set that saree and do all the makeup.
Also, there’s a tradition of serving food to the guest by new couple.

7. Missing your comfort zone, your home, your parents.
However friendly and welcoming your Sasural is, you won't feel at home there, not at least on first day, I was desperately waiting for my parents to come. I desperately wanted my mom.

8. Settling down…
All your things are out, lying there half in the suitcase, half on the bed. I was so conscious that people will judge me on this. It takes quite a time to settle down. It doesn’t happen in just one day.
9. Antakshari...
Playing games is a really easy way of making a person comfortable, and yes it was my husbands’ way to make me feel comfortable and welcomed. It was awesome two hours, some 200 people, 100 in each team, mix mashup songs of ’80s, ’90s, and recent songs. And friendly fights and teasing. It was all awesome.
10. Finally, the mistake of a lifetime... “I HAD DINNER BEFORE MY HUSBAND HAD HIS”
In our culture, the wife doesn’t have dinner until her husband has it. Although I don’t follow these things, neither my immediate in-law family follows. But that was my first day and every little mistake is considered a crime. And there were older ladies of villages, they can't accept this kind of “MISBEHAVIOUR OF DAUGHTER IN LAW” ‘these younger generation doesn’t have manners’.
They were looking at me like this

Some of family members were like this

And me? like this!!!

Anyways, my first day in my Sasural was no less than adventure, I mean keep everything aside and imagine yourself wearing a heavy saree all day long, walking in it, breathing in it, being in it….
